The major traffic revisions associated with the SR-502/503 Congestion Relief Project – Phase I are in place. NW 5th Way opened on December 5 and on December 6 the Main St/12th Ave signal was removed and the intersection restricted to right-hand turns only.
The contractor continues to finalize the traffic revisions with:
- Construction to complete the permanent median on Main St between 12th and 15th Avenues
- Striping to extend the southbound left turn pocket on 15th Ave. (component “C” as noted on the project map)
- Revised striping on 12th Ave between Jack-in-the-Box and the Fred Meyer gas station
- Installation of a center curb on NE 1st St to restrict westbound vehicles from turning left into the Fred Meyer gas station. This will improve the flow of westbound traffic on NW 1st St.
- Permanent striping on NW 5th Way
We anticipate this work will be completed by mid-February, but the timeline remains weather dependent.
In the meantime:
Construction on the various Phase 2 projects will take place over two years starting in summer/fall 2018.
- Based on new traffic flows associated with the project, WSDOT is analyzing traffic signal timing efficiencies at the Main St (SR-502) & 15th Ave intersection as well as the larger SR-502/503 intersection.
- A study is currently underway to determine if additional striping and/or parking restrictions on NW 1st, between 12th and 15th Avenues, might enhance traffic flow.
- Design on Phase 2 of the project is underway. Phase 2 construction includes dedicated right-hand turn lanes at each leg of the SR-502/503 intersection and revisions to turn-lanes on Main Street just east of the intersection. In addition, SW 1st St will be extended from SW 15th to SW 12th Avenue.

, estimated at $7.7 million, is funded by the state’s Connecting Washington
program over period of three biennium.
