[ARCHIVED] Community Breaks Ground for Veterans Memorial

eterans Memorial Groundbreaking

Gray clouds and drizzle did not dampen the spirits of those attending the ceremonial groundbreaking of the Battle Ground Veterans Memorial. The number of attendees represented the community’s strong support of the memorial that was conceived to honor local sons and daughters who have died in service to their country. The memorial, projected to be completed by year’s end, will also have a place for engraved bricks to recognize any veteran, living or deceased, who served their country in protecting our freedom.

Funding for the memorial is solely dependent on public donations and contributions. In addition to cash donations received, several organizations and businesses have donated in-kind services and materials. Recognized at the groundbreaking event for their generous contributions to the design and construction of the memorial were: Tapani Underground, project management and site construction; AKS Engineering, plan design and development; Cemex, rock and cement; Columbia West Engineering, geo-technical survey; Frontier Landscaping and North Fork Landscape, landscaping and irrigation; Mutual Materials, pavers and bricks; Prairie Electric, electric plan; R2M2, rebar & stressing; Vancouver Granite, granite plaques and engraving.

Fundraising continues in order to maintain and complete all phases of the memorial. Engraved bricks, recognizing the service of any veteran, can be purchased for placement at the foot of the memorial; organizers continue to seek contractors willing to donate services and materials, particularly cement, stone veneer, and electrical; and the 2nd Annual Country Shindig Concert & Dance fundraiser will be held on Friday April 17th.
