[ARCHIVED] Routine Flushing of City's Water Main System

The City of Battle Ground Public Works Department, as part of its ongoing water system maintenance program, will soon begin the process of flushing main water lines throughout the city. The process will occur in different areas of the city from February through May of this year.

Routine water main flushing is important to enhance water quality and clarity. The process of opening fire hydrants creates high velocity water flow which dislodges and removes built-up sediment from the system. Flushing also provides the opportunity to test fire hydrants to make sure water flow and pressure are sufficient.

As the flushing operations occur in areas of the city, it may lead to localized and temporary discolored water which can be drawn into homes and businesses if water is being used during or immediately following the flushing. The discoloration is caused by naturally occurring iron (red color) or manganese (black color) deposits being dislodged from the system. While aesthetically unpleasant, the water is not a health hazard. If discoloration occurs, open the cold tap nearest the water meter to full flow until the water runs clear. It is also advised that your water is clear before doing laundry or other projects for which discolored water could cause a problem.
