On December 13th, 15 local children participated in the Battle Ground Police Department’s first Shop with a Cop event. Battle Ground Officers also shopped for gifts for 5 additional children that were nominated to participate but were unable to attend the event.
The children, along with their parent/guardian, met at the Battle Ground Police Department where they were treated to refreshments donated by Old Town Battle Grounds and Battle Ground Safeway. The children were then partnered with their assigned officer who transported them to the Battle Ground Walmart store to shop using the $2,500 in funds received through a Walmart Community Grant. Chief Bob Richardson said “the City of Battle Ground and the police officers are grateful for this opportunity and appreciate the donations to make this event possible”.
The “Shop with a Cop” program allows children the opportunity to partner with a local police officer and shop for presents for their families and themselves. The program teaches respect, builds trust, and instills values in hopes of foster positive relationships between youth and officers. Staff from Battle Ground School District nominated children who were in good academic standing and have been positive examples for their peers to participate in the program.
