[ARCHIVED] Meet Your City Council

Three new Battle Ground Councilmembers, Shane A. Bowman, Adrian E. Cortes and Philip Johnson were sworn in and took their seats at the dais at the January 3rd City Council meeting. Also at the meeting, Council elected Lisa Walters to serve as Mayor and Shane Bowman to serve as Deputy Mayor.

Deputy Mayor Bowman and Councilmembers Cortes and Johnson were elected in November of 2011 to serve on City Council in Positions 2, 3, and, 7 respectively, with a term of office beginning January 1, 2012 and expiring on December 31, 2015. The new members of Council join continuing members Michael Ciraulo, Position 1; Lisa Walters, Mayor - Position 4; Alex Reinhold, Position 5; and Bill Ganley, Position 6, whose current terms expire in 2013.

The seven Councilmembers are elected at-large by voters in the City and serve a term of 4 years. The City Council is responsible for the legislative function of the City such as establishing policy, passing local ordinances, approving budget appropriations, and developing an overall vision for the City.

Each biennium, the Council selects one of their members to serve as Mayor. At last night’s meeting, Council elected Lisa Walters to serve as Mayor and Shane Bowman to serve as Deputy Mayor. The Mayor’s duties, in addition to having the same authority and responsibilities of all Councilmembers, are to serve as presiding officer at meetings and as the ceremonial representative of Council. The Deputy Mayor serves in that capacity in the Mayor's absence.

Under the City's adopted Council-Manager Plan of Government, City Council appoints a city manager to implement its policies, serve as advisor, and oversee administrative operations of the City.

Council meetings are generally held the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Council Chambers of City Hall located at 109 SW 1st Street. The meetings are open to the public and the public is encouraged to attend. Please view our calendar for 2012 City Council meetings.
