“Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.” - Jane Jacobs
What is a comprehensive plan?
A Comprehensive Plan looks at the city from a bird's-eye view and evaluates how the community should grow. This plan assesses citywide policies and goals in regards to infrastructure, transportation, housing, parks, economic development, and other topics that effect quality of life.
A good Comprehensive Plan starts with a Community Vision in mind. This vision is the backbone of the plan and helps shape the policies and goals, which guide day-to-day decisions for elected officials and city staff.
In 2018, the city went through an extensive outreach effort to garner the community's shared vision that would help shape all future plans and create a city that provides something for everybody. Since the adoption of the Community Vision, the city worked diligently to update category specific plans in order to help assess existing conditions and community needs.
These planning efforts will help inform the next Comprehensive Plan update, where the city will continue to reach out to the community and come up with a citywide plan that reflects the shared vision and includes the data we have collected thus far.
