Reed vs. The Town of Gilbert (US Supreme Court Decision, 2015) identified areas in which jurisdictions may need to amend their sign code, specifically in relation to "off-premise" signs. The recent ruling does not allow jurisdictions to have criteria based on the sign message. Regulations must be limited to location, duration, design, materials, etc.
The city's Planning Department will be working on the Sign Code Update in conjunction with the Planning Commission throughout 2018. A series of public meetings and multiple outreach efforts to gain input, suggestions, and preferred direction relating to the necessary amendments will be held.
